Segmentation ribbon
The Segmentation tab changes or configures sentence boundaries in supported bilingual project files. Use it before investing heavily in translation when a recurring boundary problem needs correction.
| Command | What to select and what changes |
|---|---|
| Split | One unlocked, unconfirmed unit with the cursor inside its source text. Creates two working segments. |
| Merge | Consecutive eligible units from one file. With one row selected, attempts to include the next row. |
| Resegment | The current file. Applies saved boundary rules across eligible content, regardless of selection or filters. |
| Restore Original | A segmented working file. Rebuilds its imported boundaries using the current translations. |
| Abbrev. | Opens abbreviation maintenance for the project's source language |
| Rules | Opens the source language's custom boundary-rule manager |

Split, merge, resegment, or restore
- Split and merge explains cursor placement, consecutive selection, target handling, and boundary tags.
- Resegment an existing file explains protected work, file-wide scope, restoration, and export.
- Rules and abbreviations explains creation, Keep/Split patterns, saving, and import.
Why segmentation commands are disabled
Open an individual file for segmentation
Segmentation changes are unavailable in combined Views. Open the individual file. Confirmed and locked units are protected; unlocking does not unconfirm a unit. Already merged original units can have further restrictions on splitting.
Saving a rule does not automatically restructure the document. Conversely, choosing Resegment is a content-structure operation, not merely opening a rule preview.
Inspect the result
After splitting, merging, or resegmenting, compare each changed source with its target. Move or edit target text if it no longer matches the source. Keep the original-boundary tags: Restore original segmentation needs them to separate the text again.
Use View when you only want a different screen layout. View preferences do not change segmentation.
